Everything's Designed by Someone: The Elevator Crab

Elevator Crab

Way back when in 2000, a design magazine called One was briefly available in the U.S. (and maybe elsewhere). I only got the first issue before the ad market imploded and took One with it. That inaugural issue was a goodie, though, and included interviews with a few prominent-at-the-time designers. One of them said, "Everything we own was designed by someone." (I forget who said it, but I doubt it's an original sentiment.) Let me get starry-eyed for a moment because this strikes me as a pretty powerful idea. Still, I had mostly forgotten about it until I saw this crab sticker in the elevator the other day. Apologies for the bad picture -- I had to shoot quickly before I reached my floor.

The sticker says "watch out for the door," and the sensation of danger is more compelling than in the usual, more literate interpretations I've seen. But who came up with this? Was it some guy at The Mitsubishi Elevator Concern who just thought one day, "Ehhh, how about a crab," and then punched out early for the pachinko parlor? Or was it a six-month selection process by the Digital Injury Prevention Committee?

This kind of thing freaks me out.
